Teaching plays an important part in my professional life and is something that is both a privilege and a pleasure. It is not only about passing on information but also helping develop the person.
I believe each student should be treated as an individual. I aim to give everyone a technical structure through which they are able to express themselves musically, whilst inspiring them to have a passion for what they do.
Over the last 10 years I have taught alongside some of the best cellists in Europe at the Eton International Cello Course and the Bryanston International Cello Course, whilst also being assistant to Alexander Baillie on his summer school in France (Carteret). I am currently employed by Eton College to teach cello and chamber music and by Junior Guildhall. I have also been a cello tutor in the Music Department at York University and regularly give masterclasses, recently at Chichester and Canturbury Universities and at the International Rathdown Cello Festival, Ireland.
During this time I have also built up a considerable private practice, helping people of all ages and standards. I teach the ABRSM Grade examinations and diplomas, using these as stepping-stones in the learning process, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students from conservatoires. The main priority though, no matter what the aim, is the enjoyment of music and helping each individual have the skills and confidence to achieve their ambition.
I believe that experience from other areas of my career, recitals, chamber music, and my work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and English National Opera, allows me to teach with insight and authority. Although being a good player does not necessarily mean you have the skills to be a good teacher, by paying attention to individual needs, by having a thoughtful and informative approach that builds up a student’s technique, and by gentle encouragement, I hope to help the cello and music making become part of the student's life as an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
