Matt leads a busy and diverse musical life, performing as a soloist and chamber musician at major venues and festivals across the UK and abroad, as well as freelancing with some of the best orchestras in the country. He is currently on trial to become a full time member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, is co-director of the “Cello Gathering” international cello courses and also holds a teaching post at Eton for ‘Cello and Chamber music.

In his early life he was a chorister at York Minster. He won a major music scholarship to Eton College, where a successful school career lead to him being “President of the Eton Society” and also representing England at football. (ISFA)

He was then awarded a foundation scholarship to the Royal College of Music before transferring to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where, studying with Louise Hopkins, he received both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music. Whilst studying Matt won the London Symphony Orchestra “String Scheme”, as well as support from the Philharmonia/ Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, and Craxton Memorial Fund.

In 2008 he was invited to go to the Menuhin Academy, (Switzerland) and be part of Lysy Camerata, giving concerts in festivals throughout Switzerland, also touring in Portugal.

In recent years, Matt has performed in many of the major London venues, including Wigmore Hall, St James's Piccadilly, Purcell Room and St John's Smiths Square. He has had trials for principle positions at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and with Northern Sinfonia and works frequently with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with English National Opera, Aurora and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Matt continues, where possible, to give recitals with his duo partner John Paul Ekins and to be in demand as a pedagogue. He is employed by Junior Guildhall and has an ever-growing private class with students from Durham, Cambridge and Chichester Universities.
